Foster Dogs: Se Habla Español

Last weekend, our Foster Dogs team finally got back into the great outdoors and ran an in-person event! We attended the Bronx Night Market on Saturday afternoon with three of our wonderful volunteers, a foster puppy, and a stack of new informational foster sheets in Spanish. It’s important that we continue expanding the reach of foster programming in areas where rescue groups and shelters might not already be touching. Fostering is - rather, should - be available to everyone, but there are many who are not connected to the movement simply because of their neighborhood, or due to a language barrier, or even the color of their skin.

Says volunteer Ana Laura Pulido, “¡Me encantaría ver más familias hispanas trabajando con los perros adoptivos!” [I would love to see more Hispanic families working with foster dogs!]. “Fostering should be free and rescue is for everyone! Families of all backgrounds should have access to our resources and it's up to us to start breaking down barriers to include more communities.”

Though the help of NYC Tutoring, we distributed info sheets about Foster Dogs’ programs, to folks in a neighborhood which is predominantly Spanish-speaking.

Our foster puppy Bluey joined us for the festival, and the volunteers were wearing their Foster Dogs best attire (including new masks!) to kick off the event right. We distributed dog toys from our friends at Badass Brooklyn Rescue, to people who came by to learn about fostering.

There are still innumerable animals in shelters nationwide, and we all can make a difference by working together.
