It's Raining Chihuahuas! Meet our Three Newest Rescues.

Three cuddly Chihuahua mixes entered our foster program this month in order to avoid spending one more second in a shelter. Two of them are seniors with medical needs, who luckily only had to spend a short time in the shelter and went straight into warm comfortable foster homes. All three of our rescued dogs needed further veterinary care and evaluation in order to assess next steps, which was made possible by all of our donors and the generosity of our veterinary partners. We can't wait for these three to find their loving forever homes! All are currently in foster care, looking for adopters in the New York City area.

6 year old male, neutered, vaccinated, 10 lbs, Chihuahua mix. Owner-surrender to Foster Dogs, Inc. He previously lived with another large dog, and currently lives in Brooklyn with a cat and two large dogs.

  • Crate trained: “He will literally go in his crate once his bedtime begins”

  • Housetrained: “He hasn’t had any accidents once he figured out where he needs to go potty.”

  • Fine being alone or by your side: “He follows me everywhere when I'm home, but totally fine when I leave the house”.

  • Good with dogs, or fine as a solo-dog: “He doesn't play with my guys, mostly naps right next to me all day.”

  • Enjoys walks : “He gets really excited when he hears we're going for a walk and loves long walks.”

  • Food-motivated: “Loves food and slowly discovering puzzle toys.”

  • Quirks: “He will bark at unfamiliar people, but nothing excessive.”

  • In conclusion: “He is perfect, super easy and low maintenance.”

PEEPS [ADOPTION-PENDING 5/6/20]

12 year old female, Chihuahua mix, about 6 lbs, vaccinated. New Hope Rescue from NYC Animal Care Centers, arrived to the shelter as a stray. Named Peeps since she came to the shelter on Easter Sunday! She’s in foster care in NYC, available for adoption once surgery is complete.

  • View her debut on Sarah Silverman’s Instagram, where she is lucky enough to be fostered! Peeps “loves to nap, cuddle, get belly rubs, and burrow into your sweatshirt. She is always smiling at you, like a Nana so grateful for your visit.”

  • She has lived with other dogs, and has lived as a solo-pet. Not yet tested around cats. She enjoys being the queen of the castle.

  • Will have surgery to remove lumps, and dental extractions.

  • She’s a bit hefty at a whole 6-7 lbs, and could stand to lose 1 lb. We can do it!

  • Receives daily supplements for joint health, due to luxating patella in back legs

BUG [ADOPTION-PENDING 5/7/20]

12 year old female, Chihuahua mix, about 14 lbs, vaccinated. New Hope Rescue from NYC Animal Care Centers, arrived to the shelter as an owner-surrender.

  • “Bug is very low key and quiet, has yet to really bark, but she is a talkative little Chihuahua giving us little purrs and groans when she’s happy, harrumphs and grumbles when she is displeased! She seemed to really enjoy sunbathing in the back yard and laying in front of the fire. Her idea of a perfect date is Netflix and snuggling on the couch with her person!”

  • Cuddly, enjoys the company of humans and receiving lots of head scratches.

  • Low-energy, mellow companion. “She is a perfect little couch potato, but she is quite curious and likes to go on little walks and sniff all the things.”

  • Walks: “She is great on a leash and is actually a more confident walker when walking on a leash or following closely next to her person.”

  • Bug has lived as a solo-dog, and with other dogs. She currently lives in foster outside of NYC with other small dogs.

  • Hypothyroid, receives daily medication. “She loves snacks so it’s easy to hide in chicken or cheese. She is on her way to feeling better and back in shape.”

  • Hard of hearing/vision, and overweight. Once she loses some necessary weight, her sensitive trachea and vision and hearing problems might improve due to better overall health. “She is nearly blind, but maybe can see a little bit. She’s making her way around the house fairly well considering she’s only been here a few days!”

  • She might secretly be a feline. She loves to sleep, she’s happy to be left alone, and look at those ears!
