A Special Little Old Man Foster Dog

We want to introduce you to someone really special, who is looking for a great home.

Pulled from Animal Care Centers of NYC last month after being brought in as a stray, Barry had severe dental disease and hair matting, along with a serious ear infection and a general lack of care including eye issues. He was, in short, a bit of a mess.

His dental disease was so extreme that he needed 26 teeth removed. Thanks to his amazing sponsor Susie's Senior Dogs, he got this necessary surgery, medicine for his ear infection, and a professional groom! Susie's Executive Director Erin was there from the moment Barry came onto our radar, and worked with us to ensure he got everything he needed. We're so grateful to the team at Animal Kind Veterinarian in Brooklyn who helped Barry feel better (and saved his little front-teeth as seen in his silly overbite)!

Barry is mostly blind, deaf, and has some old-man lumps and bumps. But he doesn't care. He has a keen sense of smell, and has a true love affair with food. He will gobble up whatever you offer, and leaves nothing behind. NYC PET store provided Barry with $100 worth of Instinct Nuggets, which he gobbles up like a champ.

He's a great sleeper, and is happy to cuddle into his Den Dog Bed and pass out after a long day of moseying around the house and sniffing outside.

Barry has zero issues around other animals or people, currently living with two large active dogs (who ignore him) and a 1.5 year old toddler. Note: Barry is always supervised while around the baby, mostly for his safety. He seems to appreciate living with other dogs, as that can help him navigate his new surroundings; we think another dog is a soothing presence for this mellow old man. Barry has never growled while in his foster home, and is extremely quiet.

Barry always aims to do his peeing outside, and will do great if you take him out several times per day. Just place him down outside, give him a couple minutes, and you've got a peeing pup! He uses a wee wee pad in between outdoor visits, as needed. And he *always* does his poo outdoors. Good boy!

Barry is a sweet gentle mellow relaxed guy who doesn't ask for much.

He can't see or hear, and can't handle going up or down stairs on his own - so a home with stairs should have a baby gate. He's very happy just living in a small area of the home, or is fine being picked up and carried around by hand (not as much into being a tote-bag-dog, though it's workable if you have a nice dog carrier he can adjust to). He's a total homebody, and has no desire to travel the world.

He is overall a very, very quiet boy. He enjoys roaming through his space. Once he gets to know a room, he is able to find his bed/pad/food/water and gets around just fine. He doesn't need much space -- small apartments welcome! -- and it's best for him not to be on carpet or rug, since he sometimes mixes them up with a wee wee pad (oops).

Even though Barry is super chill, he gets really giddy when he reunites with people he knows. Barry's tail wags, and he even smiles! He will rub his face in your lap, and has even rolled on his back once due to extreme happiness.

When he's in the car, he'll prefer to sit on your lap and get the best view. He can get a little antsy in the car, but in time he might learn to adjust.

Barry is a 10 year old 15 lb male Shih Tzu.
