From a shelter volunteer:

These 3 pits came into the shelter in October 2011. This was a cruelty case, so the animals were on hold for a while being the case was in progress. The case has been closed, and the hold has been lifted. However, due to very limited space at the shelter (10 pens total), the dogs must move quickly. I have been told by officials that we have a few days to work on the dogs, and then euthanasia will be the result if not moved. Let's all make our best effort in finding placement for these precious, deserving babies.

These dogs were acquired by authorities being they were living in poor conditions with inadequate resources for survival. All were chained in the woods without shelter, food, or water. They have been in the city shelter for 4 months and have gained sufficient weight. They look & feel much better. They are more than ready to move on to forever, loving homes. They truly deserve the best that life has to offer.

Jordie, Female. Beautiful girl. Very friendly. She appears young in age.

Devon, Male. Stunning guy & very friendly. He appears young in age.

Sasha, Female. Absolutely the sweetest girl I have ever encountered. Sasha was the one that was used to produce the puppies. When she came into the shelter, it was obvious that she had been nursing pups. Authorities asked about the location of pups, and the owner said that they were already placed. So, this most likely meant that he had already sold them at the young age of 5-6 weeks. This girl was so sad when entering the shelter. Other than being starved, you could tell that she was feeling sad and emotional. With TLC from volunteers, she has really come around and has started acting more jolly. All she wants to do is love on you. She is calm and gentle. Sasha does have a couple of benign fatty tumors on her that are likely able to be removed during her spay.

Meet Rincon the Healthy Coonhound (in GA)

Transport available to/near Maine for $175, in addition to his adoption fee.

Handsome Rincon is a Treeing Walker Coonhound. When rescued, he was very emaciated. His previous owner said he had never been able to feed him anything but raw corn on the cob. He is now a healthy boy of about 2 years old and 85 lbs. He is up to date on shots and neutered. He was heartworm positive but has been treated. He also loves to have his head scratched.

Rincon walks well on a leash. As a matter of fact, he was the rescue group's ambassador at a downtown Christmas open house -- he visited several businesses and proved himself to be a true gentleman. We took him to a downtown event and there were people of all ages there and he did great. He is not hyper, but does love to run on the exercise yard.

Rincon cannot live with cats as he will chase them, but he's never lived with them. Hasn't been around cats and limited around kids. He does fine with other dogs.

LA Pet Store Makes Major Waves

LA pet store stops buying from puppy mills, and now sells puppies from shelters - with help from Pet Connections Inc.. Same adoption fee ($300-$400) as many other rescues around the country (opposed to thousands of dollars for puppy mill puppies), and easily accessible to the general public.

We hate hearing how potential dog owners don't want to go to shelters because the shelters are "too sad;" those shelter dogs NEED us! Well this changes things; no more excuses!

Blue the Friendly Bulldog Mix - FOSTERED

Blue is a 3 year old Bulldog mix. She is not spayed and once had a litter of 10 puppies (let's not let that happen again!). She is good-natured and very friendly. She is house trained and knows basic commands like sit, stay, outside, shake and lay down.

Blue enjoys playing tug of war. She's been seen by a vet, and is currently a patient of the Vidalia animal clinic. She is good with children and other dogs as long as they are introduced beforehand.

Blue is 3 years old, but is still a puppy and is just a big baby. She is very well-mannered and a very friendly dog.

Hi, I’m Buddy, a nine-year-old spaniel mix weighing only 42 pounds, and my foster mom says I’m one of the cutest guys she’s ever spent time with. I’m happy to share my foster home with two younger dogs, who are nice but not nearly as wise as I am! As they say, youth is wasted on the young... I’m told I’m very easy to care for, as I don’t require long walks. I’m just happy to go out a couple of times a day, and despite some weakness in my back legs, I motor around the house quite well, especially when it’s mealtime!

I don’t bark a lot, although I do like to greet breakfast and dinner with a hearty “roo-hoo!” Giving kisses is also one of my favorite pastimes. I’m housebroken, neutered, up to date with all my vaccines, and am ready to go!

Meet Diego the Pit Papa

I have been getting a lot of questions asking about Clyde who we rescued along with his very pregnant mate a few weeks ago. Clyde is now "Diego." I have him in a separate foster home away from mom and pups as he had near-fatal kennel cough infection. In addition, Molly is VERY busy raising her 6 puppies and I am sure he is the last dog she wants to see right now. Every day we are seeing more and more of who this boy is and we can safely say he is a big puppy himself.

The shelter said he is around 16 months old and weighs 46 pounds. His foster mom says he LOVES to cuddle with her and is regaining his strength day by day. So much so that you can't win at a game of tug of war with this pup. He walks well on a leash but can use some basic obedience training. We are hoping to find him a loving home soon. A home that would never dump him in a shelter when things got tuff. Please get the word out Diego is looking for his family – we know they are out there because every shelter dog has one – we just have to find them.

Jessie James was rescued from NYC ACC on 12/21, where he was on the euth list.After a few weeks at our vets, Jessie is now in foster in NYC while he awaits his forever home. He is about 7 yrs old and 12 lbs.

Here's what his foster mom had to say: "He is really lovely around the house and is completely housetrained it seems. He LOVES his food and treats which is good because he is incredibly skinny right now and needs to be fattened up :) He slept in the bed with me last night and loved every second of it. This morning he woke me up with kisses and laying down next to me so I could pet him. Although he walks slow and needs to take little pitstops every now and then he loves his walks and his big fluffy tail keeps wagging."

Meet Juno the Homeless Lab Mix - NEEDS HOME NOW

During our routine walk, my dog and I keep seeing a scared stray collared but untagged lab mix for 3 days in row. With help, we captured the dog and he was placed in the Town of Hempstead Shelter in Wantagh, NY. The shelter staff named him Juno and report he is a healthy, docile, 3-5 year old lab mix who is not food-possessive and gets along with other dogs! Thanks to the shelter, he is now neutered and micro-chipped.

It's been 3 weeks since he was rescued but sadly Juno is still at the shelter. He's cleaned up nicely & scored well on his behavior exam.

Lets help Juno find a home, even a foster situation is a better arrangement than a shelter stay. Lets make it happen and get this 3-5 year old-Cadillac-of-a dog an awesome home.

Best Colleges Online recently published a great article on the best US colleges with dog therapy programs. It's a wonderful thing dogs do, with going into hospitals and schools, and bringing joy to all around them. Therapy dogs aren't just for visiting ailing or disabled people - everyone would benefit from some canine therapy!

"Pet therapy programs sound like such a great idea, and they certainly are. In nursing homes, hospitals, and yes, even schools, people can find love, comfort, and relaxation with the help of a furry friend. With the help of a trained therapy dog, it’s possible to find increased happiness, lowered blood pressure, and an improvement in overall well-being.

Students in college find that pet therapy programs are especially helpful when it comes to busting the stress of finals, and several schools have begun to bring in dogs during these times on an occasional, and sometimes even permanent, basis. If only for a day, these dogs turn into the stars of the college, attracting hundreds of students at a time to give them love and attention, while giving them a bright spot amid the drudgery of finals week.

Here, we’ll take a look at 10 of the very best pet therapy programs available in schools today, and learn what makes them work so well for the students and animals that benefit from them."

Meet Dudley the Abused Pittie

Dudley is the sweetest little boy that as his photos show was treated horribly, Dudley was used as a bait dog which is common in training dogs to fight one another. He has suffered a lot and was treated inhumanely but thankfully that has not crushed his spirit!

Dudley is a joy to be around, does well with other dogs and children. Dudley has a fun energy but also likes to calm down and cuddle, is a small little guy and does enjoy being a lap dog! Dudley also walks well on leash, is house and crate trained, is up to date on shots, neutered and microchipped. Dudley has such a wonderful temperament and outgoing personality that we would prefer he go to a home that will at the very least strive to have him certified for therapy work.

Meet Lucy the Low-Maintenance Bulldog

Lucy is a 7 year old English Bulldog who we've had for 6 months now. We've seen her come out of her shell and have really gotten to know the in's and out's of her personality. She's incredibly sweet, loving and loyal, she really does just want to make her person or people happy. She can rarely be a little stubborn, she'll huff and pout but she knows when you're serious, it's cute. She's really easygoing and independent; if you want to play, she's down. If you want to cuddle on the couch, she's down. If you need to work, she'll nap in the other room. She's the most low maintenance dog we've ever fostered.

She loves to make you, or everyone in the room, laugh. She plays a good game of fetch and I swear I wouldn't think a beefcake like her could jump so high when there' s a tennis ball around. She's the kind of dog who greets you at the door with her nubby tail wagging and just happy to see you. But true to her breed, after 20 minutes of playing, she's ready to nap. Or lounge, or wait for you to nap or lounge so she can cuddle with you. If you do a quick google of English Bulldog personality traits, she pretty much fits the bill. She's such a Bulldog. And I mean that in the best way possible.

Lucy LOVES people but she gets very dominant around other dogs and tends not to get along with most. But she's great on the leash so we havent had any bad encounters. We haven't seen her around cats yet. She's not spayed yet but her rescue group will take care of that once she finds her forever home. We think she may have been rescued or turned in by someone who overbred her; her teets look like they've seen a lot of puppies and there's some thick c-section scar tissue. She's completely housebroken. And all in all, she's a great happy and healthy Bulldog.

"Dear Darla".... Darla is one unique looking dog! You have to meet her in person to truly see her beauty. She is a Catahoula Cur (dumped at the shelter by her former owners) with blue eyes and brown spots. She is almost 2 years old and will do best in a home with another dog... her Alfalfa!

Meet Patrick the Frisky Jack Russell

The Susquehanna SPCA would like to thank everyone for their continued support and concerns. (...) We have been receiving a mass volume of calls and your patience would be appreciated. The SSPCA along with veterinarians are evaluating the health and care of the dogs. We are working diligently with the situation which is being handled by the SSPCA along with the State Troopers.

1/20/12. Info provided by several NYC rescuers:

127 dogs, including a litter of puppies, emaciated and eating their own waste in this Upstate NY puppy mill........

We have a terrible, heartbreaking situation in Upstate New York with Southside Kennels located in South Worcester, NY. The Susquehanna SPCA has been called in, as well as NY State Troopers, to remove 130 dogs that are tied outside with barrels for shelter and no bedding in the barrels in subzero weather.

The dogs are emaciated, eating their own feces, and in horrible physical condition and unable to fend for themselves. There are Vizslas, German Shorthaired Pointers, Weimaraners, and Rhodesian Ridgebacks in peril. There may be other breeds at this puppy mill as well.

Please help me get the word out to the neighboring rescue people. The SPCA is overwhelmed with the number of dogs they are going to have to take in and they have asked for help.

The director, and contact person for this SPCA is Liz Mackey: 607-547-8111 . This is a Cooperstown, NY number and the SPCA is located just south of Cooperstown.

Meet Pepper the Kid-Loving Mix

Sweet, smart & sassy Pepper is a young adult female border collie and pit bull mix. She was originally rescued from Brooklyn ACC on Halloween 2010. Unfortunately, her first adopter used her for breeding and the poor girl became pregnant, stripped of her pups and back on the streets to fend for herself. She turned up at Brookhaven Animal Shelter from which she was once again rescued. This time she was spayed and placed in a loving foster home.

Wonderful girl Pepper has now been searching for a forever home for over a year... She is so affectionate and so starved for love. She bonds deeply and quickly with people. We just hope her next bond will be forever!

Some of Pepper's best qualities:

1) Her smarts, she is so easily trainable and loves to learn new tricks.

2) Her athleticism and agility, this girl LOVES to jump, run and play and would do FANTASTIC in agility training!

3) Her snuggle bug factor, she is a cuddler, a lover, a smoocher and a HUGE fan of belly rubs!

4) Her love of food, Pepper is NOT a picky eater, she is an omnivore open to trying all new things. Hey, what's that in your salad...can I have some?

5) Her love of travel, Pepper is the most amazing car traveler I've ever met. She jumps right in and sits patiently, quietly and with gentle curiosity for her surroundings. No need for a crate...this girl does just fine with her doggie seatbelt!

6) Her AMAZING AMAZINGNESS with children, she loves all people and is so so gentle with kids, even toddlers!

7) She likes MOST dogs. Those she doesn't it's probably cause there's something up with the other dog. Pepper is friendly. She's not stupid. She can sort the good eggs from the bad.

Sure, she needs some training...a little leash work, some household guidelines, but most rescue dogs do.

Meet Java the Senior Shar Pei (in PA)

Java is a senior (12 year old) male neutered Shar Pei, currently in boarding at Aberdeen Kennels in PA

I was told I was bad and mean when I put in the place called a shelter, in a cold metal cage with no one to love me. I was just scared of everything - the sounds, the smells, the people. Since coming to this place called a kennel, I am not as scared and I am allowed to be myself and learn to trust people again. No one here wants to hurt or scare me and they just let me do things at my own pace.

The man here takes me out in his truck for rides and I love to just sit and ride with him and look out the window. I don't really like to go back in my kennel again but will when I really have to but they say I am being stubborn, really I just don't want to be locked up anymore.

I really need a new home, a warm comfy place to call my own, maybe a bed to lie down in and a bone to settle down with. I think I would really like a nice quiet home without any kids or cats - nothing to scare me again. I think I would like maybe an older person who will take me for some easy walks and just let me come around to them in my own time once I know I am safe and loved. I really am a good boy, just very misunderstood.

From his rescue advocate:

Java is a very quiet dog, never barking or causing a commotion, etc... He needs a super patient, quiet, loving home where he can adjust nice and slowly. He is very afraid and needs a home that wll just allow him to be who he is and let him come out of his shell in his own time! If you are a patient, caring person and are willing to show Java you are there for him and will never hurt him again - he will, in time, show you just how devoted he can be. Java will most likely not become that wiggly, hugs and kisses kind of guy, but instead most likely turn out to be that true blue, hanging out, walking slowly and deliberately by your side, kind of guy... for the rest of his years, once he feels in his heart you wont betray him as he has been betrayed in the past.

Patches currently lives in Norwood NJ which is just North of the George Washington Bridge and 8 miles South of the Tappan Zee Bridge. She is a short hair Calico and we have had her since she was a kitten (born July 2002). Patches enjoys being hugged and petted. She is strictly an indoor house cat and has never been outside. We used to give her weekly baths and she loved the blow dryer afterwards... but does not care for baths any more.

She has been an only-pet and has never had the opportunity to interact with other cats or dogs, so we're not sure how she is with other pets. She weighed 17 lbs at her last check up and has always been a lucky healthy cat.

Meet Hazel the Homeless Pit - NEEDS HOME NOW

Hazel is around 5 years old. The owner has paperwork with family history (she was supposedly bought from a breeder for a large sum...). She is filled with energy and desperate for love. She has been left outside tied to a tree on a 3 foot leash for most of her recent days/months/years. She is not spayed. She has not been to the vet since her puppyhood.

Hazel has collar rash on her neck from being tied up. She has natural instincts to chase and capture small animals such as wild squirrels and rabbits - so she can't live with small animals (cats, small dogs). She is fast and very athletic. Hazel has been around other dogs of equal size or bigger.

Hazel does like to jump and has a lot of bottled energy, so elderly people or children would not be ideal housemates for Hazel. Hazel does know how to sit and submits every time I have gotten stern with her. Please help me find a home for her. I will take care of the vet bill and cleaning of her fur and ears. Hazel is currently still outside and I dont have any where warm and safe to bring her.

Meet Bubba and Zoe the Evicted Duo

Bubba and Zoe's owner is an artist who was recently evicted, and now has to live in his work office with his partners. Bubba is a 3 yr old Bullmastiff and Zoe is an 8 yr old White Shepherd/ Greyhound mix.

These dogs are not allowed to stay in the temporary living space anymore, but their owner will be able to take them back in ONE MONTH. They need a foster for just one month - anyone want to temporarily have some handsome big dogs to show off around town?

Zoe is very well trained and gets along with everybody and other animals. She is extremely well tempered, intelligent and sweet. Bubba is addicted to love and snuggling with people. He is also extremely intelligent and gets along great with other dogs however he is not neutered. I am working with a group of people who let me and the dogs camp out in the office but it is inhibiting things here. I have exhausted all other options trying with family and friends.

We are a group of artists working to help each other through teaching and providing our resources to each other. For the last 2 years I have taken in nearly 10 NYC artists to help with tools, supplies and food to support the artist and the process. My landlord ordered a demolition team into my apartment and tore out all of the facilities. We left a few days after and here we are....

So, you’ve recently adopted an adolescent or adult dog, or you’re planning to adopt one from a rescue group or shelter in the near future. Good for you! It generally takes adult dogs a lot longer to get adopted than those irresistible, pudgy puppies – even when they are calmer, better-socialized, house-trained, and past the “chew everything in sight” stage. Shelter staffers often shake their heads as families pass up ideal, kid-friendly adult dogs in favor of pups of some highly inappropriate breed or type, just because they are puppies.

There are a multitude of benefits when you bring an adult dog into your family. You don’t have to deal with those nasty-sharp puppy teeth. And because your dog has her adult teeth, she is less likely to chew everything within her reach. If not already housetrained (and many are), a mature dog at least has the physical ability to hold bowels and bladder for longer periods of time, and can usually learn appropriate bathroom habits quickly, with proper management and training.

Plus, an adult needs to be fed only twice a day, whereas young puppies need lunch as well as breakfast and dinner. And healthy, mature dogs are capable of more physical activity than puppies, so if you’re looking for a ready-made exercise partner, you don’t have to wait months for your running buddy to accompany you as you prepare for your next 10k run. As an added benefit, you have that feel-good feeling that comes with adopting a dog who might otherwise not find her forever home.

I do not, by any means, intend to imply that adopting an adult dog is all smooth sailing. Many shelter dogs settle into their new homes without a ripple, but some arrive with minor behavioral challenges, and others carry with them a significant amount of baggage. Don’t despair! If you’re grounded in the reality that no dog is perfect from the get-go, and you’re prepared and poised to help your new dog learn your household rules, conventions, and codes of conduct starting on day 1, his potential for success in your family is very good.

Caveat Emptor

Most shelters do some sort of behavior evaluation of the dogs in their care, so you may be warned about potentially inappropriate behaviors. This may come in the form of answers on a questionnaire (if your new dog had been surrendered to the shelter by her previous owner), or notes from a staff member or a volunteer based on their observations. If you don’t allow yourself to get distracted by the shelter’s commotion, you’ll have the opportunity to make your own observations about the potential adoptee during an introduction session. Behaviors like lifting his leg in the get-acquainted room, counter-surfing to snatch toys or treats off the table, or leaping into your lap when you sit on a chair are likely to be repeated in his new environment.

Again: Don’t let these sorts of minor transgressions dissuade you from adopting the dog. All of these are typical for untrained dogs – and absolutely expected from untrained puppies!

What if your new adoptee does seem perfect? While that would be nice, it’s also possible that you will experience a “honeymoon period” with your new family member, one that may range anywhere from a few days to several months. Unforeseen behaviors may manifest over time, as the dog tests new behavioral strategies and discovers which ones are reinforced (by you, by other family members, by visitors, or by the environment), or as she recovers from the recent traumas in her life. She may become bolder about engaging in behaviors that were temporarily shut-down by the stress of her recent life experiences.

If you’re prepared for unwanted behaviors to surface, it will be easier to work through them. If tempted to give up when poor manners emerge, keep in mind that your adoptee’s previous owner(s) already gave up on her at least once, if not several times.

First Things First

The first, almost universal answer to the question of handling behavior problems is management, hand-in-hand with a medical exam.

These days, many shelter dogs come with a free “well-pet exam.” Commonly, private veterinarians in practice near a shelter generously offer their services at a discount for dogs adopted from the shelter or rescue. Take advantage of the offer as soon as possible. If your dog doesn’t come with a free check-up, make an appointment for the veterinarian you’ve interviewed and selected to be your dog’s doctor.

Common (Mis)Behaviors in Adopted Adult Dogs

Here are some common misbehaviors you might find in adult shelter dogs, along with some tips on how to work with them. If you have to prioritize a list of undesirable behaviors that came with your adopted dog, I’d suggest you start with the first two that follow: house soiling and separation anxiety, as they are two that are most likely to cause your dog to lose her happy home, yet again.

House Soiling – Some adult shelter dogs are already housetrained. Some are not. Depending on how house-proud you are, house soiling may be a minor annoyance, or a major affront to your sensibilities. When you bring your shelter dog home, assume she isn’t housetrained, and put her on an express puppy housetraining schedule: Under constant supervision (with the help of baby gates, closed doors, and leashes) or in a crate or exercise pen. Of course, you must crate train her if she isn’t already, in order to take advantage of this valuable management tool. If you just toss her in her crate and leave, you risk teaching her to hate her crate. (See “Crate Expectations,” January 2011.)

Take her outside every hour on the hour for the first day or two, and reward and praise on the spot when she eliminates. (...)

If you catch her mid-accident, cheerfully interrupt her with an “Oops! Outside!” Take her to her potty spot – and make a mental note to amp up your supervision and increase her bathroom opportunities. Do not make a big deal, or you risk teaching her it’s not safe to go in your presence. Good luck getting her to go to the bathroom on leash if that happens!

At first, don’t crate your dog for more than four hours at a time. That might mean hiring a dog walker if no one in the family can come home and let her out at lunchtime. Eight hours at night is acceptable, as long as she is crated where you can hear her (preferably in your bedroom) if she wakes up and asks to go out. If your dog soils her crate or exercise pen during a reasonable period of confinement, you have a bigger challenge ahead of you. You may need to reverse crate train, which means putting her in the crate for short periods, only when you know she is “empty,” and having her under your direct supervision when she’s not crated.

If your dog is having inexplicable accidents despite your excellent management, head back to the vet to determine if she has a urinary tract infection (which makes it impossible for her to hold her urine for very long), loose stools (which would make it impossible to hold her bowel movements for long), or some other condition that makes it difficult or impossible for her to be housetrained.

Separation anxiety – Full-blown separation anxiety can be an extremely challenging behavior to live with, manage, and modify. For starters, most dogs with significant separation or isolation issues don’t tolerate a crate well, so the “confine them to keep them out of trouble” option isn’t available.

The good news is that many of these dogs actually have separation (have to be with the one person the dog has connected to) or isolation (doesn’t like to be left alone) distress, rather than true anxiety. The intensity of canine behavior with these conditions is on a continuum from low level intensity (unhappy, but calms down after a reasonably short time, without destroying the house) to extreme panic (dog injures himself, vocalizes non-stop for hours on end, and causes massive destruction to household). If your shelter adoptee is demonstrating anxiety on the extreme end of the continuum, a trip to the veterinarian for anti-anxiety medications is in order. This will make life easier for her, and for you, while you work to modify her behaviors. Vocalizing – There are many different kinds of canine vocalizations: barking, whining, howling, yelping, growling, and more. You may not want to stop all of your dog’s noisemaking, but there may be some you’d prefer to minimize. It’s important that you learn and understand what each one means before simply trying to make them all go away. There may even be some you decide you’d like to reinforce! (For more about training your dog to be quieter, see “Positively Quiet,” July 2007.)

Jumping up – Remember, your dog’s jumping up has nothing to do with dominance. (See “Alpha, Schmalpha,” in the December 2011 issue). She’s probably either trying to greet you, get you to pay attention to her, or perhaps seeking reassurance, if she’s stressed or frightened.

The answer to this training challenge is to make sure that no one reinforces her for jumping up. Make sure that every person who wants to greet the dog is prepared to turn his or her back and step away from her when she jumps.

Next, reinforce “sit” very generously, with high-value treats, to help this polite deference behavior become her default choice (her first behavior option – the one she chooses when she isn’t sure what to do) and make sure everyone gives her attention for sitting. (See “Keeping Four on the Floor,” May 2008.) If she’s jumping up for reassurance, determine what is stressing her and make that stressor go away until you can help her become comfortable with it.

Pulling on Leash – Lots of dogs pull on leash. As annoying as it might be, don’t take it personally – and don’t blame dominance for this one, either! Dogs who pull just want to get where they want to go, and they want to get there faster than you do. If you want her to walk politely on leash, reinforce her generously when there’s no tension on the leash, and stop moving forward when the leash tightens.

If there are times when you know you won’t have time for the “stop and wait for loose leash” dance – for example, if you want her to jog with you – use a different kind of collar or harness that will let her know, “In this outfit you are allowed to pull.”

There Might Be More

There’s a good chance you will encounter other behaviors that we haven’t covered above. In every case, there is a solution to be found that can help your dog become the well-behaved companion you want her to be. You can read good books and search for answers online (and in the WDJ online archives!).

Remember to look for positive solutions; you want your new dog to like you, trust you, and want to be with you. You may need to consult a qualified positive behavior professional to help you find answers. As you research the behavior and search for answers, keep these important reminders in your head at all times: Be gentle. Be clear. Be consistent. Be persistent. Be positive. Most of all, for your adopted dog’s sake, be her forever person.

6 month old Pearl was found as a stray. She will be a thin medium sized girl when full grown. she is sweet but does have a grumbly side to her that with training her new companion may be able to get under control. She grumbles over her food and gets annoyed with other animals in the shelter. She also plays like a wild woman, with the proper play training she will calm down and listen to direction. With proper introduction to other animals she may do very well.

She is an active girl that will enjoy runs, hiking and just laying next to you on or near the couch, whichever you prefer. Because of her food issue and her wild play she should not live with young children under 10 years old.

Bubbles the Petite Mix - RESCUED!

Adorable 2 yr old Bubbles was found locked in a bathroom of a vacant apartment. She was emaciated, and was found in the nick of time. She has put on some weight and is happily eating every meal she is offered. She was instantly happy to see people and appreciates the love she is receiving. She now needs a loyal family to keep her secure and loved for the rest of her life.

A mature family is recommended kids ages 12+. Bubbles does have a high prey drive and does not get along well with other animals, but she can be redirected easily as she is very praise and food motivated.

She is a small girl weighing approx 40 lbs. She has been waiting months for her new home, but no one has come to adopt her.

1/2012 Bio: Georgia and her 6 puppies were surrendered by their "owner" to a kill-shelter in Georgia. Her rescue group saw a plea for help on Facebook, and transported her and her babies up to PA to be cared for and adopted out! What a lucky girl!

Georgia is a young mamma dog. She is a very sweet, gentle girl that is a wonderful and patient momma dog to her babies. Georgia loves to give kisses, within moments of meeting her after she endured the shelter and a huge transport with many people handling her babies she started giving kisses. Georgia has been settling into her foster home nicely and will be visiting the vet for a check up and to ensure she is as healthy as she can be while nursing her littles.

Georgia's babies consist of 3 females and 3 males who will be 8 weeks old at the end of January.

Adorable Ash is a 10 month old possible Schipperke mix - under 15 pounds. Out of state adoptions are possible....we generally adopt in states surrounding, NY, NJ...but can adopt to other states for the right home, so please contact us if you can give this guy a great home!

Ash is neutered, up to date on shots and ready for his forever home. He isn't fully housetrained, but is getting much better and should fully pick it up in no time!

Ash is a sweet, silly pup who loves playing, loves the outdoors, take treats gently, doesn't beg at the table and likes to snuggle. He is great with the baby of the house (Ash likes to give him kisses). As with all puppies, Ash will need a family that is going to put the time in that is needed to teach him proper doggie manners, and to offer any guidance he may need as he matures.

With his new housemate - they love eachother!

Lovable 1 year old petite Shepherd mix Jax needs a new foster home. He needs an active home where he can be the only pet but have play dates with other good-natured dogs who can play strong and rough. Jax is trained, housebroken and simply wonderful.

Jax is extremely good on the leash and never pulls the leader. When he gets to the dog park, his playful and energetic side comes out. MOLLY

On January 6th, MOLLY (formerly Krystal) was surrendered to the Brooklyn Animal Care and Control. This girl was unique in the fact that she was heavy with unborn pups. She was brought in with a male who was named Clyde who the shelter feels is the daddy to her pups. I met her on Saturday January 7th at the shelter and immediately saw the worried look on her face. She came in as a stray so had to remain there for 3 days. I did not even think about the huge expense of vetting her and her pups as I sent someone to pick her up as soon as her shelter hold was up.

A dog heavy with unborn pups is a huge commitment, both in time (the pups cannot be placed until they are at least 8 weeks old) and as a financial strain (vet costs, vaccinations, worming and sterilization) to a rescue. So we need help. Financial help to see this through. I need to raise funds for food, supplies, wormer, vaccinations, spays and neuters.

We felt awful leaving Clyde behind, so Waggin Train Rescue has also called the shelter to rescue him as well. We wanted this little family to be together till we find homes for them all.

Meet Dillan the Beagle/Terrier Mix

9 week old Dillan came from Alabama -- Our Best Friends Rescue saved him and 12 other puppies from death. He is looking for his forever home. Dillan has been vaccinated and dewormed -- he's got a wonderful personality!

We've been trying to figure out his breed, because he was so tiny the shelter in AL labled him a "rat terrier mix" .. his legs are getting a little longer so we are just calling him our AlabamaMix .... the majority of the pups he came in with were beagle, spaniel, lab mixes... We just know he's super cute and needs a home.

Basic Ear Care for Your Dog

Regular dog ear care is vital for the health of your canine. If performed between your scheduled check-ups with the vet, it helps to keep your dog’s ears clean and healthy. If you notice signs of discomfort you will be able to take care of them before an extra visit to the vet is required.

Signs of a Problem:
Excessive wax, bad odor, constant scratching, redness, too much matting of hair in the external region, itching the ears with other foreign objects, and excessive head shaking can be early signs of an ear problem.

Regular Inspection by Sight or Smell:
Inspecting your dog’s ears will take a little while so make it an integral part of your routine for dog grooming. And never put off cleaning your dog’s ears. Remember that regular cleanings will prevent many a common ear ailments. An infection, when left untreated, might end up being really painful for the dog and might even damage his hearing.

You can perform a dog ear care inspection at home. By this way you can detect problems easily and early. You can use both your nose and your eyes. Check for excessive wax build up, redness or other foreign materials. You can sniff your dog’s ears in order to detect problems. Usually a dog’s ears don’t smell foul at any point of time or in any way.

Take Care of Your Dog’s Ear Hair:
If you are suspicious that too much ear hair is the problem, you may consider plucking hair that has grown inside his ears. This is actually a routine dog ear care procedure that is not much of a hassle to be carried out at home and is way easier than it sounds. You must apply dog ear powder in the inside of the ears. On finding that the powder has dried, you can start plucking with your fingers or a tweezers. These ear drying powders are easily available at any affordable dog supplies store.

Moist Related Safeguards:
A good idea is to apply a pet ear-drying product after any water related activity, especially if his ears tend to remain moist and refuse to dry promptly. There is an array of good ear care products available in the market for regular ear cleaning that will cleanse foreign debris, take care of wax, and keep the ear canal dry.

Though your vet is just a visit away, you should remember that taking good care of your dog’s ear at home not only makes having a pet hassle free but also hygienic for everyone in the household.

Whether you've picked up a stray, adopted your pets from a shelter or rescue, donated to help animals, or you spend your life dedicated to rescue work each and every day, you're a wonderful light in the dark fight against pet overpopulation and euthanasia.

Shelter and rescue workers are reminded of the sad statistics each day:

· millions of dogs euthanized in shelters each year

· 14,000 animals euthanized last year in Palm Beach County alone

· 60% of dogs who enter shelters euthanized due to lack of loving homes for them

· up to 50 animals a day taken in at Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control (more statistics)

It's an overwhelming problem and one that can really weigh on the hearts of those who care so much. We hear about the Michael Vicks of the world. We see puppy mills featured on television, and the news covers every disgusting case of animal abuse as it unfolds. Most people 'tsk tsk' and feel sad for a moment, but others roll up their sleeves and get busy to be part of the solution.

Quietly, behind the scenes, without any recognition, are legions of amazing people who are making a difference in ways large and small. They are the unsung heroes whose only 'thanks' is a sloppy, wet kiss from a rescued dog or the tiniest tail wag of a frightened, beaten-down canine soul who's learning to trust again. And that is enough to keep them going when their hearts get heavy.

It's easy to wonder how your small efforts can ever help curb the problems we face in sheltering. It's easy to be discouraged as you hold a trembling, sick, or injured animal in your arms and know how many more there are. It's devastating to know that an animal you could not save has been lost. It's easy to shed tears and be bogged down by the vast numbers who need your help.

And yet, despair can be erased in a moment as you watch a long-time shelter 'guest' go home, or an abused animal slowly learn to trust you. You can make a difference, one dog at a time.

If you'd like to join the fight to save the lives of homeless, abandoned, abused animals, here are ways you can help:

· Adopt, don't buy! Purchasing a dog feeds the demand for more to be produced. Adopt a shelter dog or one from a specific breed rescue group. They rock, and will be forever grateful!

· Spay, neuter, and tag / microchip your pets. This will vastly cut down on the number of animals in shelters.

· Foster. Check with local shelters who always need foster homes for some special dogs.

· Donate. Local shelters are always strapped for funds. The more money they raise, the more pets they can save. Along with money, shelters appreciate items they need and most post a wish list on their websites.

· Volunteer. Whether it's the down-and-dirty, wonderful work of walking dogs, joining a fund raising team, stuffing envelopes or planning events, shelters need you and your amazing talents!

· Advocate. Become involved in animal legislation by writing to representatives and making your voice and the voice of helpless animals heard.

· Share. Spread the word by sharing articles and info on community shelter work and events on your social networking sites. You will find yourself meeting some great, like-minded new friends who share your vision!

· Pick up that starfish! Know that every little act of kindness to animals helps. You can't do it all, but we can all do something.

As the saying goes, "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can. It will be enough".

This gorgeous, loving girl is Ruby, a smart 1.5 yr old Pit Bull/Lab mix that was recently rescued from an Animal Care & Control Shelter and is looking for a good home. She's been in boarding for a month, and is desperate to find a foster home!!

Ruby is an extremely loyal companion who needs someone to hold her, a gentle touch and love which she has not had. Preferably would be the only-dog in the household.

This reddish/brown brindle-colored girl has been spayed and updated with all required vaccinations and really needs to be adopted and have a warm place to call home.

Nemo is a very handsome Chihuahua. He is a puppy mill rescue, so naturally he is quite tentative, but he has quite the personality when he's feeling comfortable, and he still has a ways to go! He has some of the most expressive eyes we've ever seen, and a funny little face.

Nemo is a bit of a chunky monkey, and could stand to lose a few pounds, but he is otherwise healthy. He's learning his way around a home - even using the wee wee pads more often than not.

Tucker is a 1 year old yellow lab mix weighing in at about 60 pounds. He was rescued from a high kill shelter in rural North Carolina when he was just a young pup. He spent several weeks in a foster home in NC before coming up to NY.

Tucker was previously adopted by a family who suddenly 'changed their minds' about having a second dog. The shifts and upsets in his short life have begun to affect his confidence, and he's looking for someone who will love him forever.

Tucker loves people (and their laps!) and plays well with most dogs. He currently lives with 3 cats, but needs reminders that kitties are our friends. Tucker has nervous energy that needs to be worked out through daily exercise and loving patience.

Meet Rondo the Sweet Mastiff - NEEDS HOME NOW

Rondo is a gorgeous brindle Fila Brasileiro (rare Mastiff/Bloodhound-type breed!). He was rescued by a kind couple from an abusive home over a year ago. Since then, he turned from skittish and scared of men (even cowering out of fear) to a more confident and friendly dog. His owners provided him with a calm, stable environment to reassure him that life was OK.

Unfortunately, the boyfriend left after a few months, and the girlfriend is currently in a major financial bind. She had Rondo for several months thereafter, continuing training, but cannot handle having a dog anymore. Rondo's owner got a new job, where she works longer hours for less pay, and cannot afford dog care (daily walker, vet) anymore. She currently runs home from work to walk Rondo, but it is not working out...

From his owner:
I’ve been putting this off for so long because I’ve refused to give up and I love Rondo so much, but it really is not fair to him, and his frustration is growing more every day and that is making me more sad than anything else. He is an amazingly loving companion with a HUGE heart. He listens well, takes direction well, and has been socialized with other dogs through visits to the dog park. Please... I am very much in need of your help.

He has a moderate energy level. He does take naps a lot, but I take him on 2 big walks and a smaller walk each day to tire him out. He LOVES to run at the dog park... he runs fast for a little while and plays with the other dogs then he kind of detaches himself and sits or lays near me at the park.

We hope to help find Rondo a great new home, and want this handsome big boy to live a happy rest of his life. He is a 2 year old Fila Brasileiro with an amazing ense of smell (loves to sniff everything during his walks!). He hasn't had any interaction with children, yet there's potential there! :) Rondo is great with cats, currently living with two of them.

Rondo has a medium energy level - he loves to take naps, and gets two long walks (and one short walk) every day. His owner tells us that he loves to run around at the dog park, and that he plays there with other dogs...and sometimes just hangs out with his owner by the bench.

Meet Mack the Cat-Loving Pittie

Mack is an absolutely adorable teeny tiny pittie who is stuck in boarding in Westchester. Under 1 year old, this sweet little guy adores everyone he meets. He'll shower you in kisses, and his tail with thump if you just look in his direction. He's great with kids and strangers, and thinks everyone is his new best friend!

Mack loves cats, and even gives them affection. He'd do great in a home with children and cats. Mack lived with a cat before, and was given up by his owner when she found out she could not have dogs in her apartment. Mack has been good with other dogs when introduced slowly, but would do best in a home as the only dog - other animals, like cats, would be great!!

Mack has been stuck in boarding at a vet's office since his owner gave him up in October, and he needs a foster or forever home soon.

At a very thin 42lbs, we're trying to get him to gain some weight. Being at the kennel is stressful, so it's hard to gain weight. You would never know from being around Mack though, because he is one of the happiest dogs you will ever meet. His eyes light up when people come around, and his tail thumps away in his cage. When he's excited, he hops around like a bunny. That's right, this little dog hops with joy.

Mack learned to sit very quickly, and is eager to learn new things - especially when treats are involved! Mack is neutered, up to date on all of his shots and house trained. Once he's out of the kennel, he'll gain be able to gain weight. He just wants to be near people, and needs someone to cuddle up to and love.

Camilo is a stunningly handsome 3 year old German Shorthaired Pointer mix. He made such an impression on one of the staff at the NYC shelter that she wanted to make sure he got the chance at a great home and decided to foster him.

Camilo’s favorite activity is laying belly up in bed, catching some A/C! He has quickly become a neighborhood celebrity by greeting everyone with hugs and kisses, enjoying all the petting and compliments they give him. Camilo is 50lbs, up-to-date on shots, heartworm & flea/tick prevention & neutered.

Mostly OK with other dogs - he tends to do well with smaller dogs and most females, but a meet-n-greet with his potential adopters would be essential.
